Serie 1 Based on the Highland novels by Compton Mackenzie, Monarch of The Glen follows the fortunes of Archie MacDonald (Alastair Mackenzie) who is carving out a life for himself as a restauranteur in London when he is summoned home to the Scottish Highlands after his father, The Laird of Glenbogle (Richard Briers), is injured in an accident. On his return to the 40,000 acre estate Archie finds out that the property is debt ridden and reluctantly agrees to stay on in order to help turn things around. Archie's herculean task is made more difficult by the presence of his childhood friend, Katrina (Lorraine Pilkington), who is heavily involved in protecting the rights of the estates employees and residents and the arrival of Justine, his girlfriend and co-owner of the restaurant. Michael Palin.

Na de basisschool in Birkdale en de middelbare school in Shrewsbury ging Michael Palin geschiedenis studeren in Oxford. Hier ontmoette hij Terry Jones, met wie hij vaak samenwerkte aan films en sketches. Later besloten ze dat het productiever was elk afzonderlijk te schrijven en daarna het geschrevene te vergelijken en aan te vullen dan om samen daadwerkelijk aan één ding te werken. Na Monty Python werkte hij vaak samen met oud-collega's. Zo heeft hij met John Cleese in A Fish Called Wanda en Fierce Creatures gespeeld. Vanaf 1980 maakt hij reisprogramma's voor de BBC. Deze programma's zijn verantwoordelijk voor het Palin-effect. Hiermee wordt een massale toename in het toerisme bedoeld, veroorzaakt door een van zijn reisprogramma's. Hij begon in 1980 met een aandeel in Great railway journeys of the world, een programma van de BBC waarin hij Groot-Brittannië per trein doorkruiste. Daarna volgden nog vele andere reizen, waarvan ook boeken, vaak met veel kleurenfoto's en vanuit een dagboekperspectief geschreven, verschenen zijn.

Per Trein door Engeland en Schotland Michael Palin reist per trein dwars door Groot-Brittannië. De reis begint in Euston station in Londen en eindigt in Kyle of Lochalsh, aan de westkust van Schotland. Regelmatig wijkt Michael Palin van de geplande route af om interessante plaatsen te bezoeken, zoals het York Railway Museum en de historische stad Edinburgh, waar het jaarlijkse Festival wordt gehouden. Hij maakt o.a. een tocht met de Flying Scotsman, een van de beroemdste stoomlocomotieven ter wereld, bezoekt de North York Moors Railway, bekend van de stoomtrein die figureerde in de James Herriot-serie, Brideshead Revisited en Harry Potter, en rijdt over de beroemde Forth Railway Bridge. Voor Michael Palin die als kind een enthousiaste trainspotter was, is deze ruim 1250 kilometer lange reis per trein de vervulling van een lang gekoesterde droom. Schotland Met de trein door de Highlands, waar de regen onafgebroken tegen de ramen aanslaat, naar steden als Edinburgh en Glasgow. Het ruige landschap wordt regelmatig onderbroken door groene valleien. De reis neemt ons mee naar whiskystokerijen en garnaalvissers op de West Coast. Schotland De West Highland Railway, een spoorlijn door onbegaanbare gebieden. De geschiedenis van eigenwijze Schotten als Concrete Bob, die een spoorlijn bouwde, dwars door Rannoch Moor, langs Lochs en Ben Nevis, naar Fort William en het Caledonian kanaal. Luxemburg De spoorlijn, die bijna de oorzaak van een oorlog tussen de Fransen en de Duitsers was. Want een deel van dit railtraject door de Luxemburgse en Belgische Ardennen was een belangrijke verbinding voor de industrie. Nu is het een toekomstige verbinding voor de hogesnelheidslijn. Schotland Dwars door een bijna ontvolkt gebied, in een ruige natuur met een weerbarstig klimaat, werd ooit een spoorlijn aangelegd. De lijn loopt langs diepe fjorden van Inverness naar Kyle of Lochalsh tot aan eilanden als Skye aan de westkust. Deze reis is nog altijd een fantastische manier om Schotland te beleven. Engeland De spoorlijn door de Yorkshire Dales is het bewijs van de koppigheid van een Engelse ondernemer, die het onherbergzame gebied en het woeste klimaat trotseerde om zijn droom te realiseren; een eigen spoor naar Schotland.
